Taboo Lounge is a compact but lively spot just a few steps from Madison Square Garden, blending a hookah bar, full-service restaurant, and casual lounge into one experience. Its location makes it a natural gathering place for locals and visitors looking to unwind after an event or enjoy a social night out in Chelsea without the overwhelming buzz of larger nightlife venues.

The atmosphere inside Taboo is intimate and relaxed, with a low-key vibe that balances energetic crowds and a comfortable space to hang out. The music selection sets a steady rhythm that keeps things upbeat but not too loud, making it easy to chat with friends or lean into the hookah offerings. The staff’s friendliness and attentiveness get mentioned often, especially by those returning for drinks or food, creating a welcoming environment that’s as much about the people as the place.

Food here leans into approachable yet flavorful bar-style dining with a surprising variety for vegetarians, including an Impossible Burger and veggie-heavy tacos and fried rice that fit a casual meal or shared bites. For meat-eaters, there’s a decent mix of heartier options like steak tips, lamb pops, and well-regarded salmon dishes, offering something for a range of tastes. The cauliflower bites—hand-battered and available with several sauces—stand out as a versatile snack that pairs well with drinks or hookah sessions.

On the drinks side, cocktails crafted here draw regular praise, particularly margaritas made by the bartenders, who bring a personable touch behind the bar. Happy hour deals and occasional specials, like wing offers linked to hookah purchases on holidays, suggest moments when visiting can feel especially worthwhile. That said, the hookah itself is on the pricier side at around $60, so it tends to appeal most to those fully embracing a leisurely, social evening rather than a quick stop.

Best times to visit tend to be evenings when the vibe energizes, whether post-concert or weekend nights. Visitors looking for a friendly, somewhat intimate spot where music, drinks, and hookah come together comfortably will find Taboo suited to relaxation and socializing without loud crowds or pretense.

  • Ideal for groups or pairs seeking a chill night out near the Garden
  • Vegetarian and meat options balance the casual dinner and snack needs
  • Effective blend of bar, lounge, and restaurant that feels welcoming rather than flashy
  • Service stands out for attentiveness, adding to the relaxed atmosphere
  • Best enjoyed in the evening when the space fills with local energy

Nice spot. Intimate is a good word to describe the size. The staff was very friendly and was always checking on us to make sure we were alright. I went on St. Patty's day, so they had a special buy a hookah and get a free appetizer, which was dope. I don't know on a regular day if I would have bought the hookah cause it's $60, which is a bit pricey to me. But we got the wings, which were delicious. My home girl got the cooked well, and it just brought it up a notch. We also had the shrimp and fries, and the shrimp were delicate and not over fried and tasty. So they definitely get extra points for the shrimp being on point. They also had a two for 1 drink special. Their drinks were well done, just enough alcohol for you to feel mellow after one drink and nice after the second . All in all, it's a nice spot. I would recommend getting there early if you want a seat. It gets crowded around 8. So go enjoy it's a nice atmosphere to chill and unwind after work.

This is a great restaurant, especially if you enjoy music and hookah. The bartenders are stunning, so don’t be surprised if you end up spending more than planned while enjoying their company! Overall, it’s a fantastic spot to relax and unwind with a vibrant atmosphere.

Loved this spot just steps away from the Garden. The $5 margaritas and $10 wings deal are unreal! The place was packed, energy was great, and the guys there, especially the owner and the manager, are so friendly and welcoming. Definitely going back!
